Abstract

Kenya under its Vision 2030 Agenda has been tasked with the provision of decent and high-quality livelihood by ensuring a sustainable provision of all the infrastructure required to meet its citizens social-economic needs. To reach this goal the government must therefore invest in modern technologies and approaches to access, monitor and guide infrastructure development, and evaluate infrastructure development milestones in the country. In this vein a web-based GIS application was developed as part of this research for recording and tracking of various types of customer electricity applications). Further this study of was conducted using comparative analysis to investigate the relationship between the trends in electricity supply applications, type of urban land use developments, and types of approved construction permits in Mombasa County. There existed a direct relationship between the construction permit approval types and the proposed urban development masterplan. Also, there was a direct relationship between the type of electricity applications and the construction approval permits issued. Therefore, it was concluded that type of electricity supply applications can be used as a proxy for identifying and assessing current infrastructure development. The knowledge of this relationship can be leveraged with the capabilities of a data driven web-based GIS developed for a power utility. It would allow for an effective and resource efficient manner to facilitate asset management, infrastructure planning, monitoring, and evaluation of infrastructure development in the county.
